My Creative Space: Days for Girls.

Recently one of the wonderful members of Bellingen hookers (crochet group obviously) invited us to join in with another little project going on in this fine little town. It is a group of wonderful women involved in a community project called Days for Girls. The project is about providing girls who live in impoverished communities with sustainable hygiene kits. Reusable, washable pads.

From the website: What if not having sanitary supplies meant DAYS without school, DAYS without income, DAYS without leaving the house? Girls use leaves, mattress stuffing, newspaper, corn husks, rocks, anything they can find...but still miss up to 2 months of school every year. Worse, girls are often exploited in exchange for hygiene. It turns out this issue is a surprising but instrumental key to social change for women all over the world. The poverty cycle can be broken when girls stay in school.
I got involved because I will be crocheting washcloths from cotton yarn to go in the packs - which are made up of undies, soap, the reusable pads and a washcloth. This is the kind of project that gets me so excited!! Craft and social action together! Imagine knowing that in some small way you are helping a young girl stay at school and be one step closer to changing her future. It's so exciting!! So I am asking... Would you like to crochet or knit a wash cloth for our group? We aim to make 30 hygiene packs.
They need to be 7-8inches squared and made from 100% cotton yarn, and not in light colours.
Please comment below if you would like to make one. I would love for you to be involved.

  3. Yes yes! Such an important and often untalked about subject. Something we take for granted in our country. When do you need them by? I can make 2-3 crochet washcloths.
